Bible Day and Night

'Bible, Day and Night', 25 hours of non-stop proclamation of the word of God-New Testament, was inaugurated at Holy Cross parish, Kulshekar, at 5.00 p.m. on Monday March 15. The event will conclude at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday March 16.

It's significant that such a Biblical programme will be held in Konkani for the first time in Mangalore diocese and is also unique to the rest of India. The spiritual programme is being organized by Holy Cross parish especially during the Lenten season and the year dedicated to clergies by the Holy See. About 260 readers, priests, nuns and laity will take part in 25 hours of non-stop scripture reading.
Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza inaugurated the event at Kulshekar parish at 5.00 p.m. on Monday by reading a first scripture from the New Testament.

'Bible, Day and Night', 27 hours of non-stop proclamation of the word of God-New Testament, concluded at Holy Cross parish, Cordel, at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday March 16.

It was a landmark event in the 133-year history of Cordel parish. It's also significant that such a religious programme was held in the Indian regional language of Konkani for the first time ever in the country.

Fr. Victor Machado, rector, St Joseph's Seminary, Jeppu, and diocesan vicar general Monsignor Denis Moras Prabhu were the chief guests at the concluding ceremony on Tuesday evening.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. Machado said that he had served as assistant parish priest of Cordel 40 years ago. He lauded the religious fervour of parishioners in organizing such a great event in the parish.

He hoped that French missionary Frad Saib, the founder of Cordel parish, whose intercessions have been sought by parishioners in difficulties since many decades, gets beatification for the astounding miracles believed to have occurred among parishioners praying at his mausoleum.

Monsignor Denis Moras Prabhu said that 'Bible, Day and Night', had enriched the spiritual experience of parishioners.
He felicitated all the clergies and deacons who had served at the parish in various capacities in the past.

Fr. Lawrence C D'Souza, director, St. John's Medical College, Bangalore, and former parish priest of Cordel parish, appreciated the parishioner's involvement in 9this great event.

Cordel parish priest Fr. Valerian Pinto proposed the vote of thanks. Parish council vice-president Victor Vaz compered the programme.

TV Daijiworld provided a live webcast of the programme.

Over 3000 Witness Konkani Play ‘Cordelcho Frad Saib’ - A PLay on the life of Alexander Dubios (Frad Saib) - The Founder of Cordel Church

Mangalore, Apr 24: ‘Cordelcho Frad Saib’, a Konkani play on the life of French missionary Fr Alexander Dubois (Frad Saib) was staged at Holy Cross parish grounds, Kulshekar, on Thursday April 23.

Bangalore Christ University international affairs director Dr J W Lobo was the chief guest on the occasion.

Dean of studies of St Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary Fr Ronald Serrao was the guest of honour.

Dr Lobo, speaking on the occasion, said that Frad Saib’s uncle Fr John Dubois had witnessed Tipu’s persecution of Christians and Frad Saib was inspired by his uncle’s missionary zeal to come to Mangalore and carry on the missionary work.

Fr John Dubois had built a make shift church at Ganjama near Srirangapattana for the few surviving Christians till Tipu’s death.  The D’Silva family at Shaktinagar and the Pinto family of Niddel, both in Cordel, survived the door-to-door search for Christians by Tipu’s soldiers while thousands of others were led to Srirangapattana in the late 18th century.

The survivors supported Frad Saib in his mission to revive the faith among those who were later freed from Tipu’s captivity.

Bennet D’Silva, corporator Bhaskar, parish council secretary George D’Souza, drama convener Sushil Noronha, Cordel Holy Cross parish priest Fr Valerian Pinto, assistant parish priests Fr Vincent Saldanha, Fr Arun Lobo and Fr Victor Vas were present on the dais.

Playwright Fr Ronald Serrao, Directors: Fr Vincent Saldanha and Co-Director: Fr Arun Lobo were felicitated.

The play depicts the personal and religious vigor of Frad Saib, his commitment to uplift the poor and downtrodden regardless of caste, creed, and religion.  He wore the cassocks of the Carmelite Order and served as parish priest of Milagres from 1865 to 1877 at a time when there were only two churches, Milagres and Rosario Cathedral in the entire taluk here.

Many stages were set up at the venue with the backdrop of Fr Saib’s house in France, a replica of Bishop’s House, Milagres Church, and Holy Cross Church. Over 200 artistes strived to project their best performance that brought thundering applauses from spectators.  It was indeed successful in depicting the missionary struggles of Frad Saib before the new generation of faithful.

The musical troupes of Simon Pais Bajal and Ashley Kulshekar provided the music. The stage was set by Alwyn Bajal, lighting was by Ben’s Electricals, Aanson Sounds Kulshekar provided the sound systems.  Giriappa Idya was the make-up artiste and the dances were choreographed by Merlyn Fernandes and Shalini D’Souza.

George D’Souza welcomed the gathering while Victor Vaz proposed the vote of thanks.  Lita Rasquinha compered the programme.

Over 3000 spectators were present to witness the historical play.

Procession of Offerings by Devotees
Mangalore, Apr 22: The motorcade procession of offerings by devotees from Infant Jesus Shrine, Carmel Hill, Bikarnakatte to Holy Cross parish, Cordel, began at 4.30 pm on Tuesday April 21.

It was held to mark the bicentenary jubilee celebrations of Fr Alexander Dubois, the French Friar and architect of Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar, who was popularly known as ‘Frad Saib’ of Franco Cordel, and by others as ‘Kullerda Ajjer’.

Dakshina Kannada (DK) district in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar inaugurated the stage programme.

Palemar, speaking on the occasion, said that it is a great tradition to offer the fruits of labour, acknowledging divine grace.  He added that Christians have extended their service to our nation over many centuries in every possible way and conveyed best wishes for the success of the celebrations.

MLA U T Khader said that offering of fruits of labour by the devotees is an ideal for people of all religions and the selfless service of Fr Dubois should inspire us to work for humanity and social causes.

City lawyer Ivan D’Souza said that the procession of offerings signifies the unity and compassion that sustains the community in hard times.

Khader, D’Souza, and corporator Mariamma Thomas were the chief guests on the occasion.

Kulshekar Holy Cross parish priest Fr Valerian Pinto, assistant parish priests Fr Vincent Saldanha and Fr Arun Lobo, jubilee celebrations convener Susheel Noronha, parish council vice-president Victor Vaz, and secretary George D’Souza, were present on the dais.

A convoy of 24 automobiles from various wards of Holy Cross parish depicting their patrons including three tableaux on Frad Saib and thousands of devotees participated in the procession.

The Vespers were held at Holy Cross parish by the main celebrant diocesan vicar general Monsignor Dennis Moras Prabhu.

Fr Dubois had laid the foundation stone of the Holy Cross Church, Cordel on September 14, 1873, when he was serving as parish priest at Milagres Church. He was a devout Catholic priest who inspired several people to embrace Christianity owing to his personal charisma.

People of all faiths throng his mausoleum in the church complex and a few even take away pinches of soil from his grave believing that it has miraculous healing powers.

The locals have legendary tales on Frad Saib who used to visit their household in the evenings, to recite family rosary. The parishioners continue to observe Frad Saib’s Day on December 11, every year, in recognition of his selfless service here.
